Having a rental car on a surf trip in Taghazout is not just convenient it is the difference between surfing one break and surfing six. Taghazout has world-class waves within walking distance of the village, but the full Atlantic coastline stretching north and south offers a range of spots that are only accessible with your own transport. This guide covers everything you need to plan a car hire Taghazout surf trip from surfboard racks and vehicle choice to the best spots reachable by car and how parking works at each one.
Surfboard Racks How It Works
Tika Driver Cars offers a surfboard rack add-on for €15 one-time for the full rental period. The racks fit 4 longboards or 6 shortboards and are pre-installed on the vehicle before delivery. Tie-down straps are included and the agent shows you how to secure the boards correctly before handing over the keys. Request racks when booking this is not available to add on the day of delivery.
The rack system works with all cars in the fleet including the Hyundai i10, Dacia Logan and Dacia Duster. You do not need a specific vehicle type to carry boards even the smallest economy car takes boards without difficulty.
Surf Spots Reachable by Car from Taghazout
Anchor Point and Killers are both within the Taghazout area and reachable on foot from the village. With a car, you drive and park directly above the breaks, watch the sets before committing to paddling out, and load boards and wetsuits without carrying them down the hill. The road above Anchor Point has informal roadside parking managed by an attendant arrive before 7 AM on a good swell day in peak season.
Panoramas sits just north of Taghazout and is a short drive or longer walk. The car earns its place mainly through gear transport and early morning access before the road fills with foot traffic from the village.
Imsouane is the major surf destination north of Taghazout home to Morocco's longest wave, favoured by longboarders. The driving distance from Taghazout to Imsouane is approximately 70 kilometres, taking around 1 hour 13 minutes by car. The route runs north on the N1 coastal road, which is paved and in good condition the entire way. Any car in the fleet handles this drive without issue. Imsouane has informal parking above the bay. For more routes like this one, see the full road trips guide from Taghazout.
Devil's Rock and nearby spots between Taghazout and Aourir require knowing the tracks off the main road. These are short compacted-sand and gravel tracks nothing requiring an SUV or high clearance. A standard car manages all of them.
Parking at Surf Spots What to Expect
Parking at Moroccan surf spots follows a consistent pattern. A gardien (parking attendant) manages the informal areas at most popular breaks including those around Taghazout. You pay a small daily fee typically 10 to 20 MAD and the attendant watches the vehicles during sessions. This is a completely normal and accepted arrangement throughout Morocco, not a scam.
Imsouane parking is more relaxed and fees are minimal or absent depending on where you leave the car. The bay area has space for vehicles above the beach. For a full breakdown of parking across all Taghazout-area spots, see the dedicated parking guide for Taghazout with a rental car.
Avoid leaving valuables visible in the car at any surf spot regardless of whether an attendant is present. This applies everywhere in Morocco.
Which Car for a Surf Trip
For a solo surfer or a couple with one or two boards, the Hyundai i10 or Kia Picanto with racks handles every spot on this list. It is the most fuel-efficient option and the easiest to park at tight spots like the lane above Anchor Point.
For groups of three or more with multiple boards and gear, the Dacia Logan is the better choice. The boot takes a board bag and wetsuit bags without difficulty and five people travel comfortably for longer drives like the Imsouane run. The Clio 5 sits between the two in terms of space.
The Duster adds space and visibility but is not necessary for any surf destination reachable from Taghazout on paved roads. The additional cost per day is not justified by what these routes actually require from a vehicle.
Booking Before You Land
The most practical approach for a surf trip is to book before you fly and arrange delivery to your Taghazout accommodation with racks pre-installed. If you are flying into Agadir and driving straight to Taghazout, airport pickup works equally well. Collect the car at arrivals with racks already fitted and drive north.
